After the news broke yesterday about a teacher being charged with having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old Jones County High School student, a couple of us in the newsroom had a few observations and thoughts I thought I’d share with you today.

1. Ever notice that when stories like this involve a female teacher and a student, the teacher is usually very good looking?

2. Although authorities aren’t releasing the gender of the student, if it was a guy, would “victim” be right word to describe him? Fifty bucks says he probably was bragging about it to his buddies. Don’t get me wrong, if the charges are true, this teacher violated the terms of the teacher-student relationship. But I seriously doubt, if the student is male, that he feels victimized.

3. How many of you dudes out there saw this story and thought “how come I never had any teachers like that when I was in high school?” Come on, be honest.

4. And lastly, if the accused was a male teacher and the student a girl, would anyone even be asking those previous questions? No. The teacher would be strung up. Yet another example of our double-standard society.

Any thoughts?
